a great way to explore New Zeland's lakes...

Kayaking

Kayaking is one of the most interesting ways to explore New Zealand’s picturesque lakes, meandering waterways, sheltered bays and rocky coastlines. No previous experience is required – simply hop into your kayak and let your paddle power you along at the perfect speed for sightseeing.

From Zen Garden you can spend a morning or afternoon discovering beautifully calm waterways in Whitford and Clevedon, or you can head for the sea and paddle along the magnificent pohutukawa-fringed coastline. All tours are led by friendly local guides and take between 1 and 1 ½ hours. Kayaking is suitable for moderately fit people of all ages.

Option 1: Broomfield Peninsula & Whitford Wharf

Board your kayak at the end of the Broomfield Reserve. Across the water you’ll see some typical New Zealand baches (holiday homes), which have their own boat ramps into the water. You’ll paddle past moored yachts and launches until you’re alongside the fabulous waterfront mansions of Broomfield Peninsula. Your adventure continues up Turanga Creek, which was once an important Whitford waterway for ferries and goods transportation. As you paddle past mangroves, you’ll see water birds fishing for food. When you reach the old Whitford wharf, you can celebrate successful completion of your trip at a delightful local café.
